On "UGLY" kids

I saw an article on the Huffington Post the other day about a lady named Jennifer McKendrick in Pennsylvania. She's a photographer who refuses to take pictures of "Ugly" kids. I initially thought this was a well-to-do-rich-bitch who simply didn't want to work with the non-beautiful people.

I am SO GLAD that my initial assumptions were wrong!

Jennifer decided to do some homework about the kids she was taking senior pictures of. Facebook, of course, is an instant looking glass into the lives of modern teens. Much to her dismay, several of the kids she checked out were saying very UGLY things to other kids. A quote from the article:
"It was beyond 'your clothes are ugly' or 'you don't have any brand clothes' or 'you are ugly, your hair is not right," McKendrick told WTAE-TV. "It was vicious. It was talking about sexuality."

This hit home with me. As a kid, I was not privy to the latest trends and normal things kids my age did. I wasn't very sociable outside of adult circles (even as a 4-5 year old), and didn't know how to interact with kids because of my ADD. I remember a dude named Jeff making fun of my AWESOME PF Flyers shoes I got from Walmart in art class in 7th grade. I remember another kid gluing me to my chair. Another used to terrorize me by looking under the bathroom stalls while I was trying to pee. Constant barrages of "weirdo, why don't you dress normal" or "why are you such a loner" were normal to me.

This brings us back to the whole Ugly kids thing. Bullying, be it online or in person, is never ok. I know it's been brought up recently in the media after an unfortunate soul took his own life after being bullied. Bullying does awful things to a person's self-confidence, mental/emotional states, and causes even more stress to already bogged down kids.

Parents: Take a moment to tell your kids about bullying. Tell them why it's wrong. Tell them not to follow the hive mind and do what the popular kids are doing. Help them establish a good conscious. It's alarming to see some kids not knowing the differences between wrong and right. The flash mobs in Philadelphia and other cities is becoming increasingly more problematic. Do these kids know that going out and beating up on unsuspecting folks is ok?

Bullying makes you UGLY. I don't talk to UGLY PEOPLE. You shouldn't either, unless it's to make them see the error of their ways. I will stick up for anyone being bullied. If you know someone or see someone being bullied, step in and help. If you won't help change this, who will?
